I see examples of it most days…businesses that are not making the best of what they have to offer. It annoys me. I have said it many times before. To me, business is war! It’s a constant battle for people to cover costs and make a profit. Business has rules of engagement, ethics, chance, opportunities and setbacks. But business people are missing tricks.
At the weekend, I visited a garden centre. It was on a busy main road. Thousands of cars pass by every day. I’ve driven past it for years myself. On a friend’s recommendation, I went in for once. Fantastic! Best garden centre I’ve ever seen. But why oh why don’t they cut the hedge between themselves and the road, so that people can see what they offer as they drive past? It’s effectively a screen between them and their potential market. Have they even thought about it or just not got around to it? Isn’t it obvious?
Surely, everyone’s looking for competitive advantage? Don’t we all spend a lot of time worrying about what our competitors are up to? Yet that garden centre is symptomatic of so many businesses in different sectors. Some people are beginning to wise up to what they cannot see for being too close to it. They come to me and they say, “Richard, what do you think?” They want somebody to see into their business lives with clarity.
And that very simple question is where I come in. It’s where we always begin at ashine.
